The first thing we do when born is breathing and interestingly enough it is also what deteriorates at the fastest path during our life; along with worsening the breath habits, we must question if this is not the real reason of aging! Aging is actually a deterioration of our respiration with metabolic consequences and organs degeneration due to lack of oxygen, an acidification of cells, calling for a progressing cells apoptosis.
No correct breathing also triggers cardiovascular destress with muscles decay and certainly a weak, malfunctioning heart (it is a muscle too). A poor blood circulation means also a deficient brain functionality with a lot of disorders following shortly thereafter. I cannot stress enough how important is a correct respiration and how complex the implications of an optimal breathing process are.

Why is carbon dioxide so important for a correct breathing and a healthy body?
Let’s first have a look and better understand how respiratory system works:
Delivery of oxygen is determined by the content of carbon dioxide in our blood; as oxygen is relatively insoluble in blood, 98% of oxygen gas is carried by hemoglobin, the release of oxygen from hemoglobin is dependent of carbon dioxide in alveoli and arterial blood. Carbon dioxide optimum content is at 5% and if this content is reduced, the oxygen sticks to hemoglobin, the known Bohr effect, discovered in 1904. It is well documented and can be found in any standard medical book.
In normal rest state 75% of inhaled oxygen is exhaled and in fitness mode 25%. If we already inhale such a surplus of oxygen, it is clearly that an even higher inhaled oxygen content will not increase the content of oxygen in your blood, it will do exactly the opposite. Over-breathing lowers carbon dioxide in blood and lungs, which in turn reduces the delivered oxygen from hemoglobin. In the frame of this biological paradox we must learn how to retain more carbon dioxide in our lungs and blood instead of enhancing the oxygen concentration.
To better oxygenate tissues and organs we must breathe less, not more!!
Carbon dioxide is the best dilator of blood vessels and of all smooth muscles that surrounds airways, arteries, capillaries. Each 1 mm Hg drop in arterial carbon dioxide (normal level being at 40 mmHg) reduces blood flow to the brain by 2%; therefore, when you intensify your breathing, especially when jogging or doing fitness you actually reduce the brain oxygenation and therefore sometimes you must rest and calm your breath and you get dizzy. Many conditions such as Asthma, Hypertension, heart diseases, COBP, anxiety, fatigue, etc. are related to over ventilation/ over-breathing.

Breathing correctly with Buteyco method:
The work of Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyco uncovered the link between breathing volume and a number of common health conditions, including all chronic degenerative diseases, asthma and all respiratory conditions, cardiovascular problems. The approach outlined below is simple to understand and can be incorporated easily into any routine lifestyle or clinics. The Butecyco method can be taught to anyone over the age of four, no matter how mild or severe their symptoms. There is no magic or medication involved, as this breathing method is based on physiology and has been validated by hundreds of thousands of trials, and positive outcomes for children and adults, elderly or very sick individuals.
Our modern lifestyle has a significant effect on our breathing and therefore asthma condition increased by 74% from 1980 to 1996. So did cardiovascular problems.
- Through over eating
- Through over-heating our homes and offices
- Poor exercise and movements habits
- Stress and lot of talking
- Wrong teachings in sport and fitness, yoga classes based on the dogma; big breathing is beneficial, while actually over-breathing is detrimental to a correct oxygenation of our cells and organs
Over-eating is wrong and over-breathing is even worse!!! The number of breaths taken during a normal breathing is 10-12/min and the optimum volume of air inhaled must be around 500 ml/breath, which means 5-6 liters of air/min. Asthma and COBP patients intake about 2-3 more air, providing about 10-15 liters of air/min. Hyperventilation becomes chronic. Wrong breathing manifests as following:
- Breathing through mouth
- Audible breathing during rest
- Regular sighs
- Regular sniffing
- Apnea, holding the breath
- Taking large breath prior to talking
- Regular yawning
- Breathing with movements of upper chest
- Heavy breathing at night
- Waking with a dry mouth
Over-breathing is just a habit; the central chemoreceptor in your brain regulates the amount of air you breathe. This can become accustomed to breathing too much, a vicious cycle is created and receptors becomes oversensitive to the presence of carbon dioxide in blood.

All animals and babies breathe only through the nose, while humans they get more and more in moth breathing with the age. Alone by making a breath switch from mouth breathing to nasal breathing you will get 30% of your asthma symptoms.
When you will switch from mouth breathing to the nose breath, automatically the volume of air will reduce significantly, and the air will be better conditioned for our body. You must get used to a reduced volume of air, this may take some time but is absolutely necessary and very beneficial for the healing process. Your body may use tricks to convince you to breathe more, by inducing yawning, sighing, regular sniffing. Just stay on track and when the need to breathe more arises, jut swallow immediately. It takes habitually some few days to switch from mouth breather to a nose breather.
Before you begin training your breathing exercises it is useful to establish a base measurement of yourbreathing volume. The control pause (CP) is a simple test which measures your breathing volume by practicing a comfortable breath hold after a normal exhalation. CP corresponds to the length of time that you can comfortably hold your breath after exhaling. This pausing time must not be influenced by your willpower, just hold your breath until you feel a breathing need, also called breathing hunger. Use a digital timer to measure in seconds this time. The breath, i.e. inhalation and exhalation must be silent, normal, no noise when breathing. First breath after CP must be also calm, quite, not larger as previous one breath. Your CP measurement will be most accurate when taken first thing in the morning after waking up.
CP is strictly related to your symptoms
CP is less 10 seconds then your symptoms are:
- Asthma and sleep related symptoms are severe
- Breathlessness wheezing and coughing will be frequently present both day and night
- You may also experience several other related symptoms such as rhinitis, headaches, sleeplessness, lethargy, concentration difficulties
- You are hyperventilating and the relative breathing volume is much higher than normal
CP is less 20 seconds then your symptoms are:
- Symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, exercise-induced asthma and snoring are present
- When your CP is short and breathing volume is large, you are likely to experience tiredness, headaches
- You are more susceptible to colds, flu, infections, cough, sleep apnea, snoring, anxiety, bronchitis, emphysema, hayfever, allergies, all kind of “acidic diseases”, GI disorders
CP is between 20 and 40 seconds then your symptoms are:
- Your regular major asthma symptoms disappeared but could reappear if triggered by different factors
- Your breath is a lot calmer, you do not experience night episodes or exercises induced asthma, your infections’ affinity did significantly decreased
CP is higher than 40 seconds then your symptoms are:
- No symptoms are present
- You feel energetic, healthy and clear minded
- Easy nasal breathing
- To stabilize this perfect breathing state, it is necessary to achieve in the morning for over 6 months a CP over 40 seconds
Reducing breathing volume and increasing CP:
- Your exercise must aim to increase by CP by 3-4 seconds during first 2 weeks; thereafter your goal is to increase by 10 seconds over 2 weeks.
- The most accurate measurement is taken first thing in the morning after waking
- You will be encouraged to continue as after each 5 seconds gained in CP, you will feel much better
- Your goal is to achieve CP of 40 seconds and practice this over at least 6 months

- Close your mouth, breath only through nose

- Time of exercise is 9-12 min, after a while 5-20 min/daily
